Sold for 6 to 10, and in my view the 6 is generous. Tangram, the standout game, asks children to rotate pieces to precise angles. Osmo does scale it, filling the shape in as pieces land correctly at the easier levels and offering hints, and that genuinely helps a six year old. It did not bridge the gap for my four year old, because that spatial skill is either there yet or it is not. If you are buying for a four or five year old expecting them to grow into it, you are paying now for value that arrives in a year or two.

Better than I expected. It tidies into its own stackable storage, there are no small pieces scattering across the floor by design, and once the apps are installed you don't need Wi-Fi, so it travels well. Marked down because your iPad almost certainly will not fit the base with its case on, so there is a remove-the-case ritual every time, and it monopolises the household iPad while it is in use.

Once calibrated it is dependable, but getting there takes patience. Misaligned reflector is the most common reason people report it not working, and after that it is lighting. The camera needs even, decent light and some contrast between the table and the tiles. Dim evening rooms, direct sunlight and shiny surfaces all cause trouble. That is a real constraint on when and where it gets used.

What you get is well made, includes five games with no subscription, stacks into its own storage and does not need Wi-Fi to play. Whether that is worth it depends almost entirely on whether your child is the right age and your iPad is the right model. Get either wrong and it is poor value regardless of how good the idea is.
The review
I'll be straight with you about my testing position on this one. Osmo Genius is sold for ages 6 to 10 and my son is four, so I'm reviewing it from the bottom edge of the range and below. That turns out to be useful information, because the age question is the single biggest thing people get wrong when they buy this.
First, the clever bit, because it really is clever. A little reflector clips over the iPad's front camera and bends its view down onto the table. The app can then see what your child is physically building or writing in front of them. They lay out real tangram pieces or real letter tiles and the screen responds. It isn't a gimmick and it doesn't feel like a gimmick. It's the rare piece of children's tech where the physical and the digital halves genuinely need each other, and my four-year-old worked out what was happening within about a minute, which is its own kind of endorsement.
You get five games in the box: Tangram, Numbers, Words, Newton and Masterpiece. No subscription, which is more than I can say for a lot of children's tech these days.
Now the practical warnings, which is what I'd actually want to know before spending this much.
Check your iPad first. This is not a detail to sort out after it arrives. The base doesn't fit the original first-generation iPad, and it doesn't fit the slim-bezel models either, the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros among them. That last group isn't a dead end, though, and this is where a lot of older advice online is simply out of date. Osmo sells a separate Reflector for iPad (2021) that makes the slim-bezel iPads work. It's an extra purchase and an extra small thing to lose, so price it in rather than assuming the kit is all you need. Smaller iPads need the base inserts swapped over, which is fiddly but a one-off. And your iPad probably won't sit in the base with its case on, which for most of us means taking the case off a device we've handed to a child, every single time. Go and check your exact model against Osmo's compatibility list before you buy.
Then there's the setup fussiness. The most common reason people report it not working is alignment, the reflector not sitting quite right over the camera. After that it's lighting. The camera needs decent, even light to see the pieces, so a dim room in the evening is where it struggles, and so is a table that's a similar colour to the tiles. The age range deserves proper honesty. That's real help and it works. It still didn't close the gap for my four-year-old, because the underlying spatial skill isn't there yet, and no amount of hinting invents it. That's the difference between a puzzle and a tantrum. Numbers and Words were kinder to him. My honest read is that the 6 is optimistic and this kit hits its stride a year or two later. If your child is under six, either wait or look at whether Osmo's younger kits suit you better.
Space and screen time. It stacks into its own storage, which I appreciate more than I expected, and once the apps are installed it doesn't need Wi-Fi to play, which is genuinely handy in a car or a waiting room. But it ties up an iPad for the duration, and if you only have one in the house, that's a queue. On screen time I'd say this is the good end of it. They're sitting at a table moving physical objects with their hands and only glancing up at the screen. It's not the same activity as being handed a tablet, and I don't feel the same way about it.
The verdict. When it works it's one of the more genuinely educational things I've had in the house, and it's held up better than most learning toys, which tend to get abandoned by week three. But it's expensive for a toy, it needs an iPad you already own, it wants a specific sort of lit table, and it's aimed squarely at school-age children. It rewards the right family and quietly disappoints the wrong one.
Who shouldn't buy it: anyone with a child under six hoping it'll grow into it soon, anyone with only one shared iPad, and anyone who wants a toy that works the instant it comes out of the box with no calibrating.

Almost always one of two things. First, alignment: the reflector needs to sit squarely over the front camera, and even a small nudge stops it seeing the table properly. Reseat it and run the calibration. Second, lighting: the camera needs even, reasonably bright light. It struggles in dim evening rooms, in direct sunlight, on shiny or reflective table tops, and when the table is a similar colour to the tiles so there is no contrast. Also check nothing is obstructing the view and that the app is up to date. A well-lit kitchen table with a contrasting surface solves most of it.
Is it suitable for a four or five year old?
Honestly, not really, and this is the mistake I would most want to save you from. It is sold for 6 to 10 and the games are pitched at school-age children. Tangram is the one reviewers rate most highly and it asks you to rotate pieces to exact angles to make a shape fit. The app does try to meet younger players halfway, filling the puzzle in colour by colour as pieces land correctly on the easier levels and giving hints when they're stuck, and that is enough for a capable six year old. It was not enough for my four year old, because what's missing is the spatial skill itself. Numbers and Words are more forgiving. But if your child is under six, either wait a year or look at Osmo's kits designed for younger children instead of buying this and hoping.
