SAWJEC 8-12 Biometric Gun Safe Review

I look at a lot of gun safes for what they actually are versus what the bullet points want you to think they are, and this one's a good example of the gap. The SAWJEC gives you a lot of safe-shaped stuff for $250: fingerprint scanner, keypad, backup keys, motion light, pistol pockets, a lockbox, room for 8 long guns and 4 pistols. On paper it looks like anything else in this price band, and that's actually the interesting comparison. KAER sells a similar 8-12 capacity safe at the exact same $249.99, and their listing tells you what's holding the door shut: 4mm alloy steel walls, a 4.5mm door, 20mm steel locking bolts. SAWJEC just says "heavy-duty cold-rolled steel" and stops there. No thickness, no bolt count, nothing you could actually compare against a spec sheet, at the same price a competitor is publishing theirs.

That's not a nitpick. I've built enough stuff and torn apart enough cheap hardware to know that "heavy-duty" is doing a lot of unpaid labor in that sentence. When a company wants you to know their steel is thick, they tell you the number, because it means something to anyone who's shopped this category before. When they leave it out, in my experience, it's usually because the number isn't going to help them sell the safe. I'm not saying this thing is made of tin foil. I'm saying you have no way to know it isn't, and a competitor at the identical price is proving that disclosing it is totally doable. That silence is the whole story here.

The access setup is genuinely solid, for what it's worth. Having three independent ways in, fingerprint, keypad, physical key, means you're not dead in the water if the battery dies or the sensor flakes out, which is a real problem on cheaper single-method safes. The 44.33" max rifle height is oddly specific compared to competitors who just round to "fits most rifles," and specific numbers like that are usually a good sign someone actually measured instead of guessing.

But biometric gun safes as a category have a rough recent track record, and it's worth knowing before you buy one for a house with kids in it. In 2024 the CPSC recalled more than 120,000 biometric gun safes from four brands, Awesafe, Bulldog, Machir, and MouTec, because unpaired or unauthorized fingerprints could open them. A related defect at Fortress Safe was linked to a 12-year-old's death after they got into a firearm that way. BBRKIN and MouTec separately recalled roughly 10,000 rifle cabinets nearly identical in size to this one (57 inches tall, about 5-gun capacity, $260 to $409) for the same fingerprint-bypass flaw. None of that means this specific SAWJEC unit has that problem, I have no data either way, because this listing only has four reviews, all posted the same day, all five stars, all reading like they were lifted from the product description rather than written by someone who's owned the thing for six months. There's no real ownership track record to point to yet, good or bad.

On top of that, budget biometric sensors as a class are commonly reported to lose reliability over time, especially in humid climates, and the backup mechanical locks on economy safes are frequently described as easy to defeat with basic tools. I'm not saying that's true of this exact unit. I'm saying it's true often enough across this price tier that "cheap biometric safe" and "serious security" aren't the same sentence, even when the marketing wants them to be. And the "fireproof bag" included inside is just that, a loose pouch for documents. The cabinet itself carries no fire rating, so don't treat this as fire protection for your firearms.

Bottom line: this is an organizer with a lock, not a vault. If what you need is to keep guns upright, tidy, and out of casual reach with fast multi-method access, it does that job fine and the price is fair for the capacity. If you're buying it specifically because you have kids in the house and you're leaning on the fingerprint scanner as the thing standing between them and a loaded firearm, I'd want a lot more than "heavy-duty steel" and four same-day reviews before I trusted it with that job.
