The 100Mbps Ethernet interface is your ceiling, and the path decides how close you get to it. Two properly aimed radios with clear line of sight will carry cameras, streaming and remote work without complaint. Trees, metal siding, or a unit mounted indoors and aimed through glass can pull it down far enough that you notice. I am scoring the ceiling and the variability rather than a measured figure, because I could not verify the throughput numbers circulating in forum threads well enough to stand behind them.

About $45 a unit, so roughly $90 for the pair, before outdoor cable and an access point for the far building. Set against the cost of trenching buried Ethernet to an outbuilding, that is an easy win, and it is why this radio is still on shelves a decade after it launched. It loses a point because the money only makes sense once you understand it is a two-unit job, and the listing does very little to tell you that.

Setup and compatibility 2.5

Two units, two passive-PoE injectors, outdoor cable, physical alignment, a laptop temporarily set to a static 192.168.0.x address, unique management IPs on each radio, and picking AP and Client modes correctly. There is no app and no wizard. The 24V passive PoE is also not 802.3af/at, so a standard PoE switch will not power it and may not enjoy being asked to. None of this is hard if you have done networking before. All of it is a wall if you have not.

Spec-sheet honesty 2

N300 means the radio can negotiate 300Mbps between the two units. Both Ethernet ports are 100Mbps, so nothing you do gets you anywhere near 300Mbps end to end. Everything TP-Link publishes is technically accurate, and the headline number is still the one most likely to mislead somebody buying their first bridge. That gap between the number on the box and the number that governs your traffic is exactly the sort of thing I mark down for.

Build and weatherproofing 3.5

ASA plastic enclosure, IPX5 rating, shielded Ethernet port, grounding terminal, and quoted 15kV ESD and 6kV lightning protection when it is grounded and run with shielded cable. For something under $50 that lives outside year round, that is a sensible package and the grounding terminal in particular is not a given at this price. IPX5 covers water jets rather than immersion, and newer outdoor bridges more commonly quote IP65.

The review

N300 is on the box. The Ethernet port is 100Mbps. Those two numbers sit about an inch apart on the same spec sheet, and the second one is the one that decides what you actually get.

I don't think that's a defect. I think it's the thing somebody should tell you before you buy a pair, because "300Mbps" is why people end up disappointed. Whatever the radio negotiates between the two units, your traffic still has to squeeze through a Fast Ethernet jack at each end. Call it a 100Mbps ceiling, less in practice. For a couple of cameras, a streaming box and somebody working out in the garage, that's fine. If you were planning to back up a NAS across it, buy something else.

What the CPE210 actually is: a directional 2.4GHz outdoor radio with a 9dBi dual-polarized antenna built into a plastic brick you bolt to a wall. It's for shooting a link from one building to another. House to detached garage, house to shop, house to barn. It is not a plug-in range extender and it will not fix your wifi from behind the couch, no matter how the marketing photos are cropped.

Plan on two of them. The arrangement that works is one radio on each building doing nothing but carrying the link, with a normal access point inside the far building for your actual devices. You can run a single unit as an AP and let phones and cameras connect straight to it, and people do, but then client traffic and backhaul traffic are fighting over the same airtime and you've given up most of the point.

Ars Technica ran a pair of these out to a barn across 80 meters of partly wooded ground and reported it worked well, and they landed on the same conclusion I did: the wireless usually isn't your bottleneck here, the wired interface is. That matches the spec sheet, which is reassuring, because a lot of what's written about this thing doesn't.

Here's where I'll be straight with you. There are forum posts all over with confident throughput numbers at 150 feet, at 500 feet, through metal siding, whatever you like. I couldn't verify enough of them to repeat them as fact, so I'm not going to hand you a megabit figure and pretend I stand behind it. What I can tell you is that the variables are boring and physical: line of sight, alignment, what's sitting in the path, and whether you actually mounted the thing outdoors or gave up and aimed it through a window. Trees are the usual killer. Directional antennas are great. They still haven't solved trees.

Power is where people get bitten. This runs on 24V passive PoE, not 802.3af/at. Your PoE switch almost certainly will not power it, and depending on the switch, asking it to is a good way to let the smoke out of something. Use the injector that comes in the box. TP-Link rates that arrangement out to 60m, about 200ft, of Ethernet, which is usually plenty to get from a closet to a gable end.

Setup is the honest reason to skip it. Two units, two injectors, outdoor-rated cable, physical alignment, and a laptop you've temporarily given a static 192.168.0.x address so you can reach the default management page. Each radio needs its own address. One gets set to AP, the other to Client. If you want one flat network instead of a network behind a network, the router at the far end has to come down to access point mode. This is a web UI from 2014, not a phone app with a setup wizard. My first install of gear like this ate an afternoon. The second one would take me twenty minutes.

Build quality is better than the price suggests. ASA plastic enclosure, IPX5, a shielded Ethernet port and a grounding terminal, with 15kV ESD and 6kV lightning protection quoted when it's grounded properly and run with shielded cable. IPX5 is water jets, not immersion, which is the right rating for something living under an eave and the wrong one for something you're mounting where it'll sit in standing water.

I'm not scoring long-term reliability, and I'd rather say why than quietly leave it off. I normally weight it heavily, because most gear dies at a connector or a power supply rather than at a missing feature. There are scattered reports of cold-weather dropouts and random timeouts on these, and there are also people who bolted a pair up years ago and haven't touched them since. I couldn't verify either side well enough to turn it into a number, so treat it as an open question. If the link has to carry something where an outage actually costs you money, spend more than this.

At roughly $45 a unit you're at about $90 for the pair, plus outdoor cable and probably an access point for the far building. Against trenching a few hundred feet of buried Ethernet, that's cheap, and I'd honestly still take the trench if the ground were soft and I had a weekend. For cameras, streaming, and somebody using a laptop in a detached garage, this is the right amount of money to spend. Just buy it knowing you're buying Fast Ethernet with a 300 printed on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Do I actually need two CPE210s?

For a garage or shop, yes, almost always. The setup that works is one radio on the house and one on the outbuilding forming the link, with Ethernet and a separate access point inside the far building for your devices. A single unit can be made to work as an outdoor access point, but that is a different and worse job.

Why can't I get 300Mbps out of an N300 bridge?

Because the Ethernet ports are 100Mbps. The 300Mbps figure describes what the radios can negotiate with each other over the air. Your traffic still has to pass through a Fast Ethernet jack at both ends, so 100Mbps is a hard ceiling regardless of how good the wireless link is.

Can I power it from my PoE switch?

Almost certainly not. The CPE210 uses 24V passive PoE, which is not the 802.3af/at standard your switch speaks. Use the injector that ships with it. TP-Link rates that setup for Ethernet runs up to 60m, or roughly 200ft.

Is this better than a wifi extender for a detached garage?

Yes, if you can mount and aim a radio at each end. An extender rebroadcasts a signal that was already weak by the time it reached it. A directional pair puts a focused link between two points instead. The trade is that an extender takes five minutes and this takes an afternoon.

Will it punch through trees?

Sometimes, and unpredictably. Foliage absorbs 2.4GHz, and it gets worse when the leaves are wet or the trees fill in for the season. Clear line of sight and genuinely outdoor mounting on both ends give you the best shot. If you are aiming through a window at a wooded lot, set your expectations low and buy from somewhere with returns.

How reliable is it long term?

I could not verify this well enough to score it. There are owner reports of cold-weather dropouts and intermittent timeouts, and there are also installs that have run for years untouched. I could not confirm either pattern, so I would not choose the CPE210 for a link where an outage would actually cost you something.
